Massive Winter Storm Batters US, Over 8,000 Flights Cancelled as 140 Million Face Severe Cold
Severe Winter Storm Slams US, Thousands of Flights Cancelled Nationwide: A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the United States, bringing snow, hail, and freezing rain from the Rocky Mountains to the Eastern Seaboard and disrupting travel for millions of Americans. The massive system is expected to move across much of the country, creating dangerous conditions and widespread disruption.
According to officials, more than 140 million Americans could experience severe cold and hazardous weather conditions in the coming days. Over a dozen states have declared weather emergencies as the storm intensifies, with winter storm warnings stretching from New Mexico to New England.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings about a dangerous band of ice forming from eastern Texas to North Carolina, raising concerns about road safety, power outages, and fallen trees. By Friday night, parts of Texas were already experiencing freezing rain and hail as the storm moved through the southern US.
Heavy Snow and Ice Grip US, Airlines Cancel Thousands of Flights
Forecasters expect the storm to push northeast after passing through the South. Heavy snowfall is predicted across large portions of the country, with up to one foot of snow forecast in areas ranging from Washington, DC, to New York and Boston. Governors in more than a dozen states have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The storm has caused major disruptions to air travel. According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, more than 3,400 flights were delayed or cancelled on Saturday, while over 5,000 flights have already been cancelled for Sunday, bringing the total to more than 8,000 cancelled flights for the weekend.
International travel has also been affected. Air India has cancelled all flights to and from New York and Newark for January 25 and 26, advising passengers to check their flight status and make alternative arrangements.
Meanwhile, energy companies across affected regions are preparing for potential power outages. Heavy snow and ice accumulation could damage power lines, particularly as snow-laden trees risk collapsing under the weight of the storm.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the storm progresses, warning residents to remain alert and prioritize safety during the severe winter conditions.
