Navanethem Navi Pillay wins Nobel Peace Prize 2026: The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Indian-origin Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay. The Nobel committee on Friday said Pillay had played a significant role to promote peace and international law, by ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.

The Nobel Peace Prize, announced by Navi Pillay, commended her contributions to the defense of international legal principles. She was described as one of the foremost defenders of international law in our time. Her commitment to justice and human dignity was recognized as a source of hope and inspiration for those striving to establish peace in the world. Navi Pillay will also get 1.2 crore Swedish krona (about Rs. 11.66 crore). She will be awarded the prize on December 10 in Oslo. In 2025, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won this prize.

She is currently a judge at the International Court of Justice in the case in which Myanmar stands accused of genocide, according to the Nobel Committee. Pillay has served as a judge on South Africa’s High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She also served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
