Labor Law Protests Trigger Nationwide Bharat Bandh on February 12
‘Bharat Bandh’ Today: Central Trade Union Coalition Calls 12-Hour Nationwide Strike: A Central Trade Union Alliance has called for a 12-hour nationwide bandh demanding the repeal of the newly notified Labour Code. The strike, scheduled from 6 am to 6 pm, is expected to witness participation from more than 30 crore workers across the country, according to union leaders.
The agitation intensified after the notification of the new Labour Code was published on November 21, 2025. Since then, several labour organisations have been staging protests, alleging that the reforms favor corporate interests at the cost of workers’ rights. Union representatives claim that under the government’s “Ease of Doing Business” policy, labour protections are being diluted to increase profits for companies and large employers.
In Odisha, the impact of the bandh is expected to be significant. Apart from opposing the Labour Code, various organisations have also cited issues such as rising electricity bills, power cuts, and concerns related to MGNREGA implementation as reasons for supporting the shutdown. The Congress party has extended its support to the movement.
Labour unions in Odisha have announced plans to stage demonstrations, picketing, and rail blockades at several locations. Public transportation, including buses and trucks, may face disruptions across the state. Movement of goods vehicles could also be affected, potentially impacting supply chains.
Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, are expected to remain closed during the bandh hours. Commuters have been advised to plan their travel accordingly, as normal life may be disrupted in several districts.
Union leaders maintain that the strike is aimed at protecting workers’ rights and ensuring social security safeguards are not weakened. Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to maintain law and order during the protest period.
