West Bengal Poll Violence: Suvendu Adhikari’s Assistant Dies in Gun Attack
BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Personal Assistant Shot Dead Amid Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal: Tension continues to escalate in West Bengal following the Assembly election results as Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead on Wednesday night. Reports indicate that Rath was traveling in a car near Madhyamgram when it was allegedly surrounded, and multiple shots were fired, shattering the windshield. Rath, seated in the front, succumbed to gunshot wounds after being hit in the chest, while the driver was injured and is undergoing treatment at Vibasity Nursing Home.
The attack has heightened political tensions in the state, with several BJP MLAs, including Kaustav Bagchi, Piyush Kandiya, Shankar Ghosh, and Shankar Chatterjee, present at the scene. Security forces, including the police, RAF, and central contingents, have cordoned off the area as a search for the assailants continues. The shooting took place near a national highway, adding to public fear and unrest in the region.
Meanwhile, West Bengal police report that 200 FIRs have been registered and 433 arrests made in connection with post-poll violence. Additionally, 1,100 people are in preventive custody. DGP Siddh Nath Gupta emphasized that authorities are acting under strict instructions from the Election Commission of India to enforce a ‘zero tolerance’ policy toward election-related violence, amid growing concerns over law and order in the state.
