Cigarettes To Become More Expensive From February 1: This news may come as a big shock to cigarette smokers and consumers of pan masala. The central government has decided to impose excise duty on cigarettes from February 1, 2026. An official order was issued by the government on Wednesday night. Earlier, in December 2025, the government had approved the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2020, which paved the way for tightening the tax regime on tobacco products.
Heavy taxes on tobacco products
According to the new system, excise duty on cigarettes will be determined based on their length. The duty will range from Rs 2,050 to Rs 8,500 per thousand cigarettes. This means that the longer the cigarette, the higher the tax. After this decision, the price of cigarettes is expected to increase, which will directly affect the pockets of consumers. The government’s aim is not only to increase revenue but also to discourage the use of tobacco products and take strict measures towards public health.
