Two Countries Restrict American Entry After Trump Imposes Travel Restrictions: On the first day of 2026, Burkina Faso and Mali announced that American citizens will not be allowed to enter their countries, responding to travel restrictions imposed by US President Donald Trump. This move comes as a direct reaction to the US banning or limiting citizens from 39 countries from entering the United States.
Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Karamo Jean-Marie Traoré, confirmed that US citizens will face the same entry rules that the US applies to Burkina Faso citizens. Similarly, Mali’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement confirming the ban, although it expressed regret for not consulting the US before taking the step.
President Trump’s travel restrictions affect many countries, including 39 nations, several of which are in Africa. Citizens from some countries are fully banned, while others face stricter entry rules. The restrictions also include countries whose football teams have qualified for the FIFA World Cup, set to be held in the United States and Canada. Trump has clarified that athletes will be allowed entry, but no such allowance has been made for fans.
Most of the countries affected by the US travel restrictions are African nations, including Syria, Palestine, Niger, Sierra Leone, and South Sudan. Partial restrictions apply to countries like Senegal and Ivory Coast.
This new ban by Burkina Faso and Mali marks one of the first international reactions to the US travel rules under the Trump administration, showing growing tensions over immigration and entry policies.
