But many people complain of heartburn, gas, heaviness, or acidity after eating potatoes. In such a situation, the question arises whether potatoes really increase acidity or if there is some other reason behind it?

According  to experts, in most cases, the problem is not with the potato, but with the way of eating it and the person’s digestive capacity.

Potatoes are a natural source of resistant starch. It is a type of starch that is not fully digested and reaches the large intestine. The bacteria present there ferment it, causing gas formation, which can cause symptoms like bloating, heaviness, and acidity in some people, especially those with sensitive digestive systems. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or recurring digestive problems, eating large amounts of potatoes can also cause discomfort. Although potatoes are generally considered safe for digestion, consuming them in large quantities can cause gas and abdominal pain in some people.

How to use correctly?

  • Boiled or baked potatoes are usually easily digested. While French fries, chips, or potatoes cooked in too much oil and spices can slows down the digestive process, which can lead to acidity and gas problems.
  • Green or sprouted potatoes should be avoided. Such potatoes can increase the amount of a natural toxic substance called solanine. which can cause stomach pain, nausea and digestive problems.
