Trade Unions, Farmers Call Nationwide Strike Against New Labour Codes
February 12 Bharat Bandh: Workers’ Unions Protest Against Four Labour Codes: A nationwide strike called by central trade unions, with strong backing from farmers’ organisations, is set to disrupt normal life across several parts of India on Thursday, February 12. The strike is expected to impact banking services, transport systems, and general business activities, particularly in the public sector.
The bandh has been jointly called by major trade unions including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), All India Central Trade Union Confederation (AICCTU), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC).
Farmer organisations, notably the United Kisan Morcha (SKM), have also extended support to the strike, strengthening its nationwide impact.
The primary reason behind the protest is opposition to the four new labour codes promulgated by the central government in November. These labour codes have replaced 29 existing labour laws, a move trade unions argue will weaken workers’ rights, dilute job security, and curb collective bargaining powers.
Apart from the labour codes, trade unions have stated that the strike is also against what they describe as “growing attacks on the working class”, including issues related to privatisation of public sector units, rising unemployment, inflation, and erosion of social security benefits.
Union leaders have called upon workers across sectors to participate in the strike, warning that essential services may face interruptions. However, state administrations have said necessary arrangements will be made to ensure emergency services remain functional.
With widespread participation expected, citizens have been advised to plan their travel and banking needs in advance to avoid inconvenience.
