India formally maps 27 places of Arunachal Pradesh: The Government of India has updated the official Survey of India map of Arunachal Pradesh. A total of 27 places have been formally marked with standard Indian names. This move comes in response to China’s repeated efforts to rename Arunachal as ‘Jiangnan’ or ‘South Tibet’.
The development comes at a time when India and China are trying to maintain stability on the border, but no agreement has been reached on territorial claims. The event carries greater diplomatic significance as Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to visit India ahead of September BRICS summit in New Delhi.
The updated map includes strategically important passes, lakes, settlements and a war memorial along the border with China. Four important mountain passes, Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La and Thag La. Apart from this Sambo Sarovar, Longju, Maja, Bisa, Bara Kundun, Chhota Kundun, Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Buddha Mandir, Jairampur, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Chhota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura, Kamlang Nagar, Sher-e-Thapa Memorial has also been included in the map.
