Government Plans Smaller LPG Cylinders to Tackle Shortage
India May Cut LPG Cylinder Size from 14.2 Kg to 10 Kg: India is facing a potential cooking gas shortage as LPG imports have been disrupted due to the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route. The tensions between Iran and Israel have affected shipments, putting pressure on domestic supply, as India depends on imports for nearly 60% of its LPG needs.
To manage the situation, government oil companies are considering supplying smaller cylinders of 10 kg instead of the standard 14.2 kg. This move aims to extend limited stock and ensure wider distribution among households. Pricing is expected to be adjusted based on the reduced quantity, though regulatory approvals and operational changes will be required.
LPG Supply Hit as Strait of Hormuz Crisis Disrupts Imports
Officials have warned that supply conditions may tighten further, with daily consumption around 93,500 tonnes. Meanwhile, in Odisha, reports of black marketing have emerged, with commercial cylinders being sold at highly inflated prices, severely impacting the hotel industry.
The government has assured strict action against black marketing and is exploring emergency measures to stabilize supply and support affected businesses.
