Passengers will now have to pay a higher fuel surcharge in addition to the base fare while booking tickets
Indigo flight tickets gets costlier: The country’s largest airline company IndiGo has announced to increase the fuel surcharge on its domestic and international routes. This new rule has come into effect from 6 October 2026. The airline has taken this step in view of the ever-increasing prices of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF).
According to IndiGo, the new fuel surcharge has come into effect on 6 October 2026 at 12:01am. The revised fuel charges are now distance based. It has been increased by ₹100 to ₹350 for different distances. Passengers will now have to pay a higher fuel surcharge in addition to the base fare while booking tickets. However, the final price of the ticket may vary depending on the route, date of travel, available seats and other charges.
The move comes days after domestic ATF prices rose by Rs 16 per litre, or about 13.2%, from Rs 121 to around Rs 137 per litre from October 1. This is the third consecutive monthly increase, after prices rose by Rs 5 per litre in August and Rs 6.28 per litre in September.
IndiGo said the latest month-on-month increase in fuel prices exceeded 14%, taking ATF costs to among their highest levels in the last decade. ATF accounts for a significant share of airline operating costs and affects airlines’ cost structures and network economics.
The new rates of surcharge based on distance for domestic flights are as follows:
up to 500 km: ₹375
501–1,000 km: ₹600
1,001–1,500 km: ₹900
1,501–2,000 km: ₹1,150
Above 2,000 km: ₹1,300
