Mumbai Court Restrains CarryMinati, Others from Posting Allegedly Defamatory Content Against Karan Johar
Karan Johar Wins Legal Battle as Mumbai Court Orders CarryMinati Video Takedown: In a significant development, the Mumbai Sessions Court on Monday granted interim relief to filmmaker Karan Johar, restraining YouTuber Ajay Nagar, popularly known as CarryMinati, talent manager Deepak Char, and others from publishing or circulating allegedly defamatory content against him on social media.
The petition was filed by Apoorva Mehta, Chief Executive Officer of Dharma Productions, in the court of Principal Sessions Judge P.G. Bhonsale. Senior advocates Pradeep Gandhi and Parag Khandhar, representing Karan Johar, argued that certain social media influencers had uploaded videos on YouTube containing defamatory, obscene, and offensive remarks against the filmmaker.
The legal team contended that the content had severely damaged Johar’s reputation and sought immediate removal of the videos along with an interim injunction to prevent further circulation.
Defence Argument
On the other hand, lawyers Vikas Khera and Amit Kukreja, appearing for Ajay Nagar, argued that the YouTuber had already removed the videos in question. They claimed that since the content had been taken down, there was no justification for approaching the court.
However, Karan Johar’s counsel countered this by stating that although the original videos had been removed, they had already been viewed by millions. Furthermore, clips from those videos were being reshared in the form of reels and reposted across various social media platforms, causing continued harm.
Court’s Observation
After hearing both sides, Judge P.G. Bhonsale observed that, prima facie, the statements made by Ajay Nagar and Deepak Char appeared defamatory and included obscene language directed at Karan Johar.
The court held that such content must be removed immediately and that there was a need to restrain individuals from sharing or resharing the videos further. The judge emphasized that allowing such circulation could continue to harm the filmmaker’s reputation.
Interim Order Issued
In its interim order, the court temporarily restrained content creators, including unidentified individuals referred to as “John Doe,” from posting, publishing, or disseminating any defamatory material against Karan Johar until the final hearing of his interim relief plea.
Additionally, Meta platforms have been directed to remove links to videos containing the allegedly objectionable content.
The matter will now be heard further as the court considers the final decision on Johar’s plea.
