Late Entry to Cost MPs Dear: Parliament to Enforce Strict Attendance Rules from Budget Session: With the beginning of the new year, Parliament is set to introduce stricter rules to enforce discipline and accountability among Members of Parliament (MPs). Under the new system, merely entering the Lok Sabha will no longer be enough to mark attendance. MPs will now be required to arrive on time and register their electronic attendance from their designated seats inside the House.
According to the new rules, which will come into effect from the Budget Session, MPs who arrive late will not have their attendance counted. This change will have direct financial consequences, as daily allowances and portions of salary will be deducted for those who fail to meet attendance requirements.
Until now, MPs were allowed to mark attendance by signing a register kept in the lobby, regardless of whether they actively participated in the House proceedings. This provision will be discontinued. Going forward, attendance can only be recorded electronically from within the House, and there will be no provision to mark attendance after the House is adjourned.
The move is being seen as a significant step toward improving Parliament’s work culture by promoting punctuality, seriousness, and active participation in legislative proceedings. Officials believe the new rules will ensure that MPs remain present during debates and discussions, strengthening democratic accountability.
With these measures, Parliament has sent a clear message: discipline and responsibility are no longer optional but essential duties of elected representatives.
