Reason of the protest –
A five-day total shutdown called by civil society groups to protest the death of two children in a bomb attack earlier this month in Manipur has brought normal life to a standstill across the state’s valley districts. The bandh, which began on Sunday, April 19, is being spearheaded by the Meira Paibis (“women torchbearers”), various civil society organisations, and a people’s collective formed in response to the fatal blast.
The police have also warned that anti-social elements are succeeding in hijacking demonstrations held by the protesting groups. The ongoing shutdown was triggered by the tragic incident that took place on April 7 in the valley district of Bishnupur, where a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl lost their lives in an explosion that has since sparked widespread outrage. Protesters are demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and swift justice for the victims.
They have also aligned calls for action against alleged Kuki militants operating in hill districts with their primary demand. Markets, educational institutions, government offices, and transportation services remained largely closed on the first day of the shutdown, with only essential services operating in some areas.
