Nepal floods damage; preliminary reconstruction estimate exceeds NPR 723 billion: Following the devastating floods in Nepal, the government is now preparing a report for reconstruction and rehabilitation. Preliminary estimates indicate that NPR 723.315 billion will be needed to rebuild the damaged physical infrastructure.
According to the Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA) report conducted by the government, NPR 723.315 billion (US$ 4.74 billion) would be required for reconstruction and restoration following the devastating floods that struck Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa district on August 26. At least 1,377 people have died and over 5,000 people were missing in this disaster so far. The devastating flood has caused heavy destruction in many areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.
The floods caused extensive damage to power and road infrastructure. 13 hydropower projects with a capacity of 759 MW and 5 solar plants with a capacity of 24 MW have been affected. Similarly, 69 kilometers of roads have been damaged. 33 motorized bridges were swept away while four bridges were partially damaged. Of the 64 suspension bridges in the flood-affected area, 53 have been damaged. 73 billion 34 crore 29 lakh 60 thousand rupees will be needed for the revival of the entire transport infrastructure.
The floods have also caused heavy damage to the social and productive sectors. 7,570 private houses were damaged in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan. Apart from this, 48 government buildings, 18 schools, 7 health institutions and 30 cultural heritage sites have been affected. 1,806 hectares of agricultural crops, 17 bank branches and 4,800 commercial establishments have been affected in these area. Of the 15 affected local bodies in five districts, 3,026 houses have been damaged in Nuwakot’s Vidur municipal area alone.

Sushil Kumar Shrestha, senior divisional engineer and committee member of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, said that data and details have been collected and analyzed from the relevant ministries, departments and bodies. Based on this, a preliminary report of the damage and resources required for reconstruction has been prepared.
