Nepal Floods: Death toll climbs 903, mass burials for unidentified victims: It has been 5 days since the devastating floods hit Nepal, but normalcy is yet to return. The death toll has reached 903, while 4,250 people are still missing. Rescue and relief operations are underway on a war footing.
The most difficult rescue operation is going on in the tunnels of hydropower projects. Experts from India, China and South Korea are also working together with the Nepali Army to rescue the people trapped in the ‘Upper Trishuli-1’ project of Rasuwa. In the meantime, several bodies have been recovered, still awaiting for identification. In such case, the final process is being completed by preserving the evidence related to the identity. At the same time after completing the process of identification and necessary investigation, the last rites are being performed collectively. Families are still searching for their missing people, so identifying the bodies has become an important part of the rescue operation.
So far 9,435 people have been evacuated safely. But as the water level rises again, the difficulty of the relief teams has increased. People have also been warned to be careful when the water level of Bhotekoshi river rises. On the sixth day of the floods in Nepal, the rescue operation is still going on. So far, dead bodies have been recovered from all the eight affected districts. At least 272 bodies have been recovered from Chitwan, 207 from Navalparasi East, 151 from Navalparasi West, 62 from Gorkha, 95 from Nuwakot, 55 from Dhading, 37 from Tanhun and 24 from Rasuwa. Preliminary investigations have suggested that the cause of the disaster was the collapse of ice and rocks near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Currently, 26 temporary relief centers are being run in Rasuwa and Nuwakot for flood affected people. India has sent the fourth consignment of relief materials to Nepal. On Saturday night, the C-130 aircraft of the Indian Air Force left for Nepal with 11 tons of relief goods.
