Nobel Prize Winner Nargis Mohammadi Sentenced To Seven And A Half Years In Prison : Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nargis Mohammadi, who has been a vocal advocate for human rights in Iran, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison on charges of conspiracy and propaganda. Nargis has been on hunger strike in prison since February 2 for her demands. The government’s decision comes at a time when such a harsh approach by the Tehran government has created discontent and concern among human rights activists and the international community.
Court ruling
Nargis’ lawyer Mustafa Nili said that the Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced her to six years in prison for conspiracy. She was also given an additional one and a half years in prison for defamation, bringing her total sentence to seven and a half years. The court also imposed a two-year travel ban on her after she completes her sentence, preventing her from traveling abroad in the future.
Hunger Strike and Arrest
Nargis’ hunger strike against prison authorities is still ongoing. Nargis was suddenly arrested by security forces last December during a public ceremony in Mashhad to honor 46-year-old Iranian lawyer and human rights activist Khosrow Alikordi.
The Iranian government has not yet officially confirmed the new sentences
, but the country has taken a series of tougher measures against protesters. The court’s ruling comes as the government tightens restrictions on civil liberties following the recent protests in Iran. Human rights activists say such sentences are intended to demoralize prison workers.
The new sanctions against Mohammadi come as Iran seeks to negotiate with the United States over its nuclear program. US President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Awasthi Araghchi said his country would stand by its position on uranium enrichment and would never bow to pressure .
