Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s troubles have worsened as international crude oil prices are skyrocketing. The sharp surge in global petroleum prices threatens to trigger severe secondary inflation across essential commodities in the country. Now the government is finding ways to curb petroleum consumption. It is worth noting that Pakistan’s foreign reserves are already depleted and it recently admitted that it would soon seek help from United States.
Under the core proposals evaluated during high-level meetings chaired by PM Sharif, the government is considering to mandate a four-day workweek for public and private sector institutions. Accompanied by a 3 day weekend from Friday to Sunday. Officials aim to reduce daily vehicular movement and ease urban transport demand.
Commercial markets, shopping malls and other event venues will remain closed early evening to curb indirect energy and fuel consumption. Additionally, public sector departments are preparing schedules for rotation-based working and work from home facility.
