Rajiv Kumar appointed as part-time chairman of HDFC Bank: The board of directors of HDFC Bank has announced the appointment of former Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar as the new chairman. He will be appointed part-time chairman of the bank for a period of three years after approval from the RBI.
Rajiv Kumar will replace former Chief Election Commissioner Atanu Chakraborty, who abruptly resigned in March citing ethical concerns. Kumar later became the 25th Chief Election Commissioner of India.
HDFC Bank said in a regulatory notice that the board of directors has approved the appointment of Rajiv Kumar as an independent director of the bank for a period of four years. This appointment will be effective from June 30, 2026. His appointment requires the RBI’s approval. He will also be appointed part-time chairman of the bank for a period of three years after approval from the RBI.
The bank said Rajiv Kumar took over as Secretary, Department of Financial Services (2017-2020) at a time when public sector banks were facing many challenges. Meanwhile, Shashidhar Jagadishan’s current tenure as Managing Director (MD) and CEO of HDFC Bank is set to end on October 26, 2026. He assumed this role from October 27, 2020. His current three-year tenure (October 27, 2023 to October 26, 2026) was approved by the RBI in 2023.
