Voting Begins for 37 Rajya Sabha Seats, Results by Evening
Rajya Sabha Elections Today: Close Contests in Bihar, Odisha and Haryana: Voting for the Rajya Sabha elections will begin at 11 am today, and the results are expected to be announced later in the evening.
Out of 37 seats, 26 candidates have already been elected unopposed from seven states. Prominent leaders elected without contest include Sharad Pawar, Ramdas Athawale, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, M. Thambidurai, Vinod Tawde and Babul Supriyo.
However, tough contests are expected in three states – Bihar, Odisha and Haryana.
In Bihar, the first four seats are likely to be won by candidates from the NDA alliance, including Nitish Kumar and Ramnath Thakur from the JDU, and Nitin Naveen and Shivam Kumar from the BJP. The fifth seat is expected to see a close fight between NDA candidate Upendra Kushwaha and Grand Alliance candidate AD Singh.
In Odisha, the ruling BJP and the opposition BJD are locked in a close contest for the fourth seat in the 147-member assembly. Both parties are expected to secure two seats each, but the final result may depend on cross-voting.
A similar situation has emerged in Haryana, where the BJP has fielded Sanjay Bhatia while the Congress has nominated Karamveer Bodh. The entry of BJP-backed independent candidate Satish Nandal has added uncertainty to the contest.
Political observers say the results of voting in these three states could bring unexpected outcomes due to possible cross-voting by MLAs.
