SC Grants Harish Rana Right to Die with Dignity
Supreme Court Orders AIIMS to Begin Passive Euthanasia Process: In a major decision, the Supreme Court of India allowed 32-year-old Harish Rana to undergo passive euthanasia. The bench of Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice K. V. Vishwanathan directed All India Institute of Medical Sciences to admit him and make arrangements to remove the life-support system.
Harish Rana, a resident of Ghaziabad, suffered a severe brain injury in 2013 after falling from the fourth floor of a hostel while studying at Panjab University. Since then, he has been in a permanent vegetative state and fully dependent on life-support machines.
The court said that human dignity is very important, and when a person’s life is being kept alive only by machines with no chance of recovery, they have the right to die with dignity.
Passive euthanasia means withdrawing life-support treatment, allowing a patient to die naturally. However, active euthanasia, where death is caused by injection or drugs, is still illegal in India.
