Supreme Court’s Historic Decision : Historic decision of the Supreme Court. Maintaining health and hygiene during menstruation is now the right to life. According to Article 21 of the Constitution, a woman has the fundamental right to life. The Supreme Court has ordered to provide free sanitary pads to students in schools. The court has directed the central and state governments to provide free sanitary pads to students in all government and government-aided schools.

The Supreme Court has also said that schools should have separate toilets for girls and a pad disposal mechanism. The government should formulate a national policy to ensure that no student is hindered from studying due to lack of health and hygiene. The right to maintain health during menstruation and to have sanitary pads for this purpose is part of the ‘right to life’ as per Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan delivered the landmark verdict. The court’s verdict was delivered in a case related to how the central government’s ‘Menstrual Hygiene Policy’ can be properly implemented for students in government and government-aided schools across the country.
