‘Use By Date’ label mandatory for loose sweets: Uttar Pradesh government has taken major step towards purchasing sweets ahead of festive season. Now customers can see the expiry label before purchasing loose sweets from the shop.
Sweet shops are crowded during weddings and festivals. Generally customers prefer to buy open sweets from the shop. But he does not know about the expiry date of that sweets. Keeping the problem in mind the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) of Uttar Pradesh has decided to implement an important rule regarding open sweets in shops.

Under the new rule, sweet making units or sweet shops will now be required to clearly state the expiry date and shelf life of loose sweets. So that customers are informed before they are purchasing. The food safety department noted it believes that clearly displaying the “Use by Date” will inform consumers about the appropriate timeframe for consuming the food product and will enable them to make more informed decisions regarding the freshness and quality of the sweets. Because over time, the quality, taste, and freshness of sweets are affected, depending upon the ingredients and weather conditions. The new rule will come into effect from October 15 ahead of festivals like, Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath.
In a separate step, the state has also prohibited the use of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol in milk and dairy product processing units across states.
