Veteran Pandvani Singer Teejan Bai passes away at 70: Chhattisgarh’s legendary folk singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai passed away at the age of 70. She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Raipur on Sunday.
Doctors said, Teejan Bai was suffering from a prolonged illness. She had been admitted since May 27, 2026. She died at 3:15 am while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Born in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, Teejan Bai gave new recognition to her wonderful singing style and Pandavani art in the country and to global audiences. She dedicated her life to preserving and promoting Pandavani, which is the traditional storytelling performance based on the Mahabharata. Teejan Bai was known for her commanding voice, dramatic stage presence, and expressive performances. Through decades of performances in India and abroad, she helped transform Pandavani from a regional folk tradition into an internationally recognised art form. She was conferred the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour. Her passing has cast a deep shadow of grief across the global community of folk and art culture.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai were among those who expressed grief over Teejan Bai’s death and paid their tributes to her.
