Supreme Court Allows Vinesh Phogat to Compete in Asian Games Selection Trials
Vinesh Phogat Gets Supreme Court Relief, Cleared for Asian Games Trials: Renowned Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has received major relief from the Supreme Court. The Court allowed her to participate in the selection trials for the upcoming Asian Games and dismissed the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) petition against her.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had also ruled in Vinesh’s favour. The WFI later challenged that decision in the Supreme Court, but the top court refused to change the High Court’s order.
A bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe praised Vinesh Phogat, saying she has made the country proud with her international achievements. However, the Supreme Court also expressed concern over the way the Delhi High Court handled the case and warned against too much judicial interference in sports matters.
On May 22, the Delhi High Court had allowed Vinesh to take part in the Asian Games trials. The court criticised the WFI’s selection rules, calling them discriminatory and unfair to athletes returning after maternity leave.
