SIR Exercise: Over 20 lakh names removed from draft voter list: More than 20 lakh names have been removed from Odisha’s draft electoral rolls published on Sunday. As part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, the aim is to ensure that the electoral roll remains accurate by identifying and removing ineligible entries from the draft list.
According to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R.S. Gopalan, a total of 20.14 lakh voters have been deleted from the draft electoral roll following the revision process. Odisha now has 3.13 crore registered voters after the revision. This includes 1.60 crore males, 1.53 crore females, and 2,777 third gender, he said. Special Intensive Revision was held between May 30 and June 28.
At the same time, the CEO assured citizens that adequate safeguards have been put in place for genuine voters. If a person’s name has been removed by mistake, they can apply for its restoration through the prescribed process. Officials will examine such applications before making a final decision.

On the other hand, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had appointed 10 senior IAS officers on July 3 as electoral roll observers to oversee the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Odisha, with July 1, 2026, fixed as the qualifying date for the exercise. The observers have been instructed to maintain the accuracy, inclusiveness, and integrity of the electoral roll throughout the revision process.
