Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar passed away at 80

Sajjan Kumar was first elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and later became general secretary of the Congress’ Delhi unit.

Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar passed away at 80: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar passed away in Delhi on Thursday. Sajjan Kumar was serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail for the past seven years. He was convicted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. After his health deteriorated in the jail, he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Sajjan Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on 17 December 2018 in a case related to the killing of five Sikhs and the burning of a gurdwara during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. A three-time Lok Sabha MP, Kumar represented the Outer Delhi constituency and was a prominent Congress leader. He resigned from the party following his conviction by the Delhi High Court in 2018. In February 2025, a Delhi court also sentenced Kumar to life imprisonment in a separate case concerning the killing of two Sikh men during the riots.

He was first elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and later became general secretary of the Congress’ Delhi unit. He was a loyalist of Sanjay Gandhi, the son of Indira Gandhi. In 1980, he was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha from the Outer Delhi constituency on a Congress ticket. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1991. In 2004, he won the Outer Delhi seat again with a record over 8.5 lakh votes. He was sworn in as Delhi Councillor in 1977.
