A Class IX student consumed pesticide after mother snatches mobile phone: In a disturbing incident, a Class IX student reportedly died by suicide after his mother took away his mobile phone. Heartbroken by the loss of her only son, the mother later attempted to end her life by consuming poison.

The incident occurred in Hatikhana village under Jagatpur police limits of Kataka district. The deceased has been identified as Ayushman Sahu (15), alias Somu, son of late Subas Chandra Sahu. He was a Class 10 student at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir in Purbakhachha. According to police, the family was busy performing the rituals for the first death anniversary of Somu’s father on Thursday. But Somu was reportedly spending excessive time on his mobile phone, neglecting his studies. Despite repeated warnings from his mother, the boy did not reduce his mobile usage. Later his mother scolded and hid the phone. Upset over this, the minor allegedly consumed pesticide kept at home for protecting stored grains from insects.

Family members first rushed him to a private hospital in Jagatpur.  After Somu’s condition deteriorated he was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead while undergoing treatment. Devastated by the news of her only son’s death, his mother also consumed poison. Neighbours rushed her to a nearby private hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition. The incident has left the entire village in mourning.

Police have registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family. Further investigation is underway.
