Adani Airports announces major revamp of Mumbai T1: Mumbai International Airport Limited, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited(AAHL) has announced the partial redevelopment of the northern part of Terminal 1B at Mumbai Airport. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the security concerns regarding nearly 60-year-old building. The redevelopment will start from January next year.
According to the information provided by Adani Airports, about 5.5 crore passengers travel from Mumbai airport every year. Only 50 lakh or about 9% passengers will be temporarily affected during this redevelopment work. There will be no impact on the remaining 91% passenger traffic.
To maintain the convenience of airlines and passengers, the Adani Group has offered airlines the option to temporarily transfer their flights to Navi Mumbai International Airport. MIAL will provide full support to airlines during this transition.
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, stated, ‘Renovating the aging infrastructure was crucial. The fire at Terminal 1 in April this year further increased the risk. With the Navi Mumbai airport now operational, we have a better option to allow for phased operations without completely shutting down Terminal 1.’ He also clarified that the flight relocation to Navi Mumbai is only temporary, not permanent.
Upon completion of the redevelopment, Terminal 1’s passenger capacity will increase by 33%, from 15 million passengers per year to 20 million passengers per year. Furthermore, all historical airline slots will be retained and new slots will be made available.
