West Bengal Polls: BJP Steps Up Efforts to Challenge TMC Rule
Assembly Elections Near, BJP and TMC Prepare for Tough West Bengal Battle: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put full focus on winning the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. With the polls approaching, political activity in the state has increased sharply. Under the supervision of Union Home Minister and BJP’s chief strategist Amit Shah, the party is working on a detailed strategy from the booth level to the central leadership to challenge the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
In the last Assembly elections, the BJP made major gains, increasing its seat count from just 3 in 2016 to 77 in 2021. This made the BJP the main opposition party in West Bengal. This time, the party is concentrating on strengthening its organisation at the grassroots level. BJP leaders believe that recent changes due to the Special Intensification Revision (SIR) of the voter list and internal problems within the TMC have created a favourable situation for them. Some leaders have even claimed that these factors could help end Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule.
On December 30, Amit Shah said that the BJP would win the next Assembly elections with a two-thirds majority and form the government in West Bengal. He strongly attacked the TMC, accusing it of corruption, poor governance and encouraging infiltration. His comments have further heated up the political atmosphere in the state.
The Union Home Minister has also accused the TMC government of sheltering Bangladeshi infiltrators for electoral gains. He claimed this was being done to change the state’s demographic balance, calling it a serious and dangerous issue. Shah said that if the BJP comes to power, it will set up a “national security grid” to completely stop infiltration.
Over the past five years, the BJP has worked steadily to expand its base in TMC-ruled West Bengal. As elections draw closer, the party has intensified these efforts with a renewed strategy. Shah has made it clear that the BJP will contest the elections on key issues such as illegal infiltration, women’s safety, political violence and corruption.
Senior party leaders say the BJP will leave no stone unturned to win the elections. Amit Shah is personally overseeing campaign planning, while party workers are active at the grassroots level. At the same time, the TMC is facing internal challenges, which have increased pressure on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. BJP leaders point to the formation of a new party by Humayun Kabir as another factor adding to TMC’s troubles. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also sparked political discussion.
Humayun Kabir has announced that his new party will contest the elections. BJP leaders believe this could affect the TMC by dividing its Muslim vote base. Meanwhile, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has responded aggressively, saying his party will win at least one more seat than it did in the last election.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the TMC won 216 out of 294 seats, five more than in 2016. The BJP won 77 seats, while the Left and the Congress failed to win any seats. With both major parties gearing up strongly, the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections are expected to be highly competitive.
