Cuttack now ‘Kataka’, Odisha govt corrects official spellings of several administrative units: The Government of Odisha issued a notification on June 22, 2026, announcing the correction and standardisation of English spellings for the names of districts, sub-divisions, tahasils, blocks, and urban local bodies. Officials clarified that the corrections apply only to English spellings and do not alter the actual names of administrative units.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department released the directive under notification number RDM-DRC-POLICY-0003-2025/26277. The government stated that the decision seeks to preserve Odisha’s linguistic and cultural identity by aligning English spellings with Odia phonetics. Effective from the date of publication in the Odisha Gazette, the notification mandates that the correct English spellings within the official schedule be updated and replaced with the newly standardized versions. Among the most notable changes are Cuttack being officially spelt as ‘Kataka’ and Rourkela as ‘Raurkela’. The following are the major spelling revisions based on Odia pronunciation.
