Eid Milad-un-Nabi observed with religious fervour: Today auspicious festival of Eid Milad-un-Nabi is being celebrated across the country. This day holds special significance for the Muslim community. This day commemorates the birth of Prophet-e-Islam Hazrat Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. People remember his life, his teachings and the messages he gave to humanity.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi is also known as Milad-un-Nabi, Eid-e-Milad, Mawlid or Mawlid-un-Nabi-ash-Sharif. The festival is celebrated on 12th of Rabi al Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. Prophet Hazrat Muhammad is considered to be the last prophet and the final messenger of Allah. His life and his teachings are considered a guide for the Muslim community. People pray wearing clean or new clothes. Many Muslim families clean and decorate their homes on this occasion. On this day, Ibadat, recitation of Quran and religious meetings are organized in mosques. In many places processions are taken out and help is also given to the needy.
This festival is called ‘Eid of Eids’. This festival is celebrated in many countries including India, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Germany. At the same time, in Muslim-majority countries, this day is a national holiday.
According to historians, Prophet Hazrat Muhammad was born around 570 AD in Mecca, Saudi ArabiaThe tradition of publicly celebrating Eid-e-Milad is believed to have begun during the Fatimid era in Egypt. Later, by the 12th century, this tradition spread to many Muslim areas including Syria, Turkey, Morocco and Spain. Sunni Muslims usually celebrate Eid-e-Milad on 12 Rabi-al-Awwal whereas Shia Muslims celebrate it on 17 Rabi-al-Awwal.
