Governor Acts After Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Resign, Government Dismissed: A dramatic political chapter came to an end in West Bengal after Governor R. N. Ravi dismissed the government led by Mamata Banerjee and dissolved the state assembly following the completion of its constitutional term. The move came amid intense political uncertainty after the ruling Trinamool Congress suffered defeat in the recently concluded assembly elections. With the dissolution of the House, the formal requirement for Mamata Banerjee to resign as Chief Minister has also ended.
Mamata Banerjee had earlier refused to step down, alleging that the election outcome was the result of a conspiracy rather than the people’s mandate. Addressing party workers on May 6, she accused the Election Commission of favoring the BJP and claimed that counting was deliberately delayed in nearly 100 constituencies to weaken the morale of the Trinamool Congress. Declaring herself “free from the chair,” Mamata said she would now focus on strengthening the opposition INDIA alliance alongside leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
The dissolution of the assembly marks the end of a 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress in Bengal politics. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing to form its first-ever government in the state after securing a clear majority in the elections. The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP-led government is scheduled to take place on May 9 at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, signaling a major political shift in the state.
