Mirabai Chanu wins India’s first gold, Rishikant and Muthupandi bag silver medals: India’s weightlifting queen Mirabai Chanu has won India’s first gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2026. She dominated the women’s 48kg weightlifting event with a record-breaking total lift of 190 kilograms. She lifted a total of 190 kg in the 48 kg weight category of women’s weightlifting.

Mirabai Chanu lifted 85 kg in snatch and 105 kg in clean and jerk. She also won gold at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games. She has also won silver in Glasgow Games 2014.

After this, Rishikant Singh managed to win the silver medal in men’s 60 kg category despite injury. Due to a knee injury, he could not maintain his lead in the gold medal race. Raja Muthupandi made his debut memorable by winning the silver medal in the men’s 65 kg category in the night session. Muthupandi lifted 126 kg in snatch and 160 kg in clean and jerk, making his total weight 286 kg.

With this India’s medal tally rose to 4(1gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) in the 2026 Commonwealth Games. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have congratulated players on their achievement. Australia is number one with a total of 33 medals, including 14 gold, eight silver and 11 bronze.

Along with this, Indian boxer Jadumani Singh Mandengbam advanced to the men’s 55kg quarterfinals at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He beat Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman 5-0 on Sunday, dedicating the triumph to the heroes of the Kargil War.
