Orangutans soon be shifted to open-air enclosures: The five rescued infant orangutans at Nandankanan Zoological Park may soon get access to an open-air enclosure. Nandankanan Zoological Park authorities said this will be a part of their stress relief and enrichment programme.
Nandankanan Zoological Park authorities are considering allowing the five rescued infant orangutans access to an open-air enclosure. The proposal will be placed before the newly formed technical committee for its opinion before final decision. The open enclosure is located next to the Hand Rearing Centre (HRC), where the infants are currently kept in a closed, air-conditioned room under 24-hour monitoring.
Zoo officials said that allowing them periodic time in a larger outdoor space will help boost physical activity and improve mental well-being by giving them a feel of a natural habitat. Meanwhile, officials said there has been improvement in the health of the infant that was suffering from persistent fever, after being closely monitored by veterinarians and animal keepers.
To oversee the welfare and long-term care of the rescued apes, the zoo has constituted a five-member technical committee. The panel includes a veterinary officer from Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru, a representative from the Wildlife Institute of India, the Project Coordinator of the Centre for Wildlife Health at OUAT, a veterinary officer nominated by the Director of National Zoological Park, New Delhi, and the Director of Nandankanan as member-convener.
Forest officials said efforts are underway to gradually create conditions similar to their natural habitat to help the young apes adapt, till a final decision is taken on their long-term rehabilitation.
