Private schools in the state will no longer be able to raise fees by more than 5 percent annually without prescribed rules.
Private schools cannot raise fees over 5%: The Punjab government has a taken major step towards regulating arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has signed the ‘Punjab Regulation of Fees of Unaided Educational Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026’. After its implementation, private schools in the state will no longer be able to raise fees by more than 5 percent annually without prescribed rules. This will bring transparency to the fee structure and provide relief to parents from arbitrary fee hikes.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann thanked the Governor and called it a big decision taken in the interest of students and parents of Punjab. In a message shared on social media, Mann said that his government will not allow education to become a business. He said that education is the right of every child, and the government is fully committed to reducing the additional financial burden on the pockets of common people. The government aims to provide quality education, not to let education become a means of earning.
He said that for a long time complaints were being received by private schools of arbitrary fee hike. The Governor has given a big relief by giving his approval to the ordinance in the interest of children and parents.
