Sambalpur gets new Doppler Weather Radar Station

The advanced radar will provide precise tracking for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, squall lines, depressions, and cyclones.

Sambalpur gets new Doppler Weather Radar Station: To get more accurate and advanced weather information a new Doppler weather radar station was inaugurated at Jamadarpali in Odisha’s Sambalpur. The radar has already started providing weather-related data over the past few days. Once fully operational, it is expected to improve the availability of advance weather information across western Odisha.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday inaugurated the new C-band Doppler Weather Radar station at Jamadarpali via virtual mode. The advanced radar will provide precise tracking for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, squall lines, depressions, and cyclones. Such information is expected to help the administration improve preparedness and disaster response.

With an operational range of around 250 km radius, the facility is expected to benefit nearly 10 to 12 districts—including Sambalpur, Boudh, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Nuapada, Balangir, and Kandhamala—are expected to directly benefit from the enhanced tracking capabilities. Additionally, the installation will significantly aid in the security and water management of the Hirakud Dam reservoir, while also boosting navigational safety for the Jharsuguda Airport.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal, local MLA Jayanarayan Mishra, OSDMA managing director Rajesh Prabhakar Patil and India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra were present at the inaugural ceremony. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra thanked both the state and central governments for their cooperation in setting up the radar facility.
