TMC Rebel Group Approaches Mamata; Appointment Speculation Grows: On Monday, rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee said Mamata Banerjee would be welcome as the faction’s Chief Advisor if she wished to join. The rebel group also removed Mamata Banerjee as party chairperson and suspended Abhishek Banerjee.

At a special meeting in Kolkata, MLA Arup Roy was unanimously elected as the new party president. Several senior leaders, including Arup Biswas, Firhad Hakim, Rathin Ghosh, and Sabina Yasmin, were named vice-presidents.

Ritabrata Banerjee, Javed Khan, and Sandipan Saha were appointed general secretaries, while Akhruzzaman Ansari became treasurer.

Ritabrata said the faction would inform the Election Commission about the decisions and insisted that they had followed party rules. He added that it was up to the Election Commission to decide on the legitimacy of the meeting.

The rebellion intensified after TMC’s heavy defeat in the Assembly elections. Earlier, 58 of the party’s 80 MLAs supported Ritabrata Banerjee’s claim to become Leader of the Opposition, challenging the party leadership. The split has also reached Parliament, with some TMC MPs backing the BJP-led NDA.
