Assam floods: Railway bridge collapsed, agricultural land destroyed: Heavy rains have disrupted normal life in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have left a trail of destruction in both states.
In Assam, a 300-meter-long iron bridge was washed away due to torrential rains and flooding. Meanwhile, in Arunachal Pradesh, traffic has been disrupted in several areas as roads have caved in following continuous rain and floods. A total of around 22, 124 people have been affected by the floods in the districts of Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur and Kokrahjar as per report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Dhemaji is currently the hardest hit district, with 15, 483 people affected by rising flood waters. The flood waters have submerged 96 villages and damaged around 1, 690 hectares of agricultural land. Meanwhile, in Arunachal Pradesh, traffic has been disrupted in several areas as roads have caved in following continuous rain and floods.
Heavy rainfall has created flood-like conditions in Assam’s Dhemaji district. Rivers are outpouring and severe erosion has damaged a railway bridge, rail connectivity to several areas. Amidst this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He took stock of the flood situation and assured all possible assistance. Himanta also shared several photos of the floods, including one showing the railway bridge damaged by erosion.
In a post on X, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, ‘I thank Hon’ble Home Minister Amit Shah for calling and inquiring about the flood situation in Dhemaji. I apprised him of the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken here. He has also assured us of all possible assistance from the Government of India to tackle this situation.’
