India-China war , Now Chhatrapati Shivaji 14,300 Feet Statue protect border . The Sino-Indian War , also known as the Indo-China Border Dispute, was a war between China and India in 1962. The disputed Himalayan border was a major pretext for the war, but other issues also played a role.  A series of violent incidents along the Sino-Indian border began when India granted asylum to the Dalai Lama following the 1959 Tibetan uprising in China . India, under the Forward Policy, placed military outposts along the border along the McMahon Line , north of the eastern part of the Line of Actual Control declared by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in 1959.

The Chinese army launched simultaneous attacks in Ladakh and across the McMahon Line on 20 October 1962. The Chinese army advanced over Indian forces on both fronts and illegally occupied Rezang-La in Chushul in the west and Tawang in the east . China declared a ceasefire on 20 November 1962 and also announced its withdrawal from one of the two disputed areas. During the 1962 Sino-Indian War, more than half of Arunachal Pradesh was temporarily occupied by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army . China then declared a unilateral ceasefire and its troops withdrew behind the McMahon Line .

Most of the fighting was fought at high altitude. The Aksai Chin region is a vast desert of salt flats located at an altitude of about 5,000 metres above sea level and Arunachal Pradesh is a mountainous region with many peaks rising to over 7,000 metres. Military doctrine generally requires a numerical superiority of about 3:1 in infantry to enable an attacker to succeed. In mountain warfare this ratio must be much higher as the topography of the terrain favors the other side’s defences. China was able to take advantage of the terrain and the Chinese army occupied the highest peak areas. Both sides faced difficulties in logistical and other operations due to the altitude and cold conditions and many soldiers of both sides died from the freezing cold.
