IMF Releases $1.2 Billion Under Extended Fund Facility for Pakistan
IMF Approves $1.2 Billion Bailout for Pakistan Amid Economic Crisis: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the disbursement of approximately $1.2 billion to Pakistan following the successful completion of key programme reviews. The funding comes under Pakistan’s ongoing $7 billion bailout programme and includes progress under both the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). The agreement was finalized after a series of discussions, including in-person talks earlier this year and subsequent virtual negotiations, culminating in a staff-level agreement announced on March 28, 2026.
The financial assistance arrives at a critical time for Pakistan’s economy, which is grappling with soaring inflation exceeding 22 percent, widespread energy shortages, and a worsening fiscal situation. The IMF has tied the release of funds to strict reform measures, including expanding the tax base to sectors such as agriculture, retail, and information technology, as well as implementing structural reforms in the energy sector. These conditions have already led to policy actions, including increased electricity tariffs aimed at stabilizing the country’s financial position.
In addition to IMF support, Pakistan has also secured $2 billion in financial assistance from Saudi Arabia, strengthening its foreign reserves. While the IMF programme follows a formal review process, geopolitical dynamics remain a point of discussion among analysts, given the influence of major stakeholders in the institution. The latest funding tranche is expected to provide short-term economic relief, though experts emphasize that sustained recovery will depend on Pakistan’s ability to implement long-term structural reforms and maintain fiscal discipline.
